Underbar Fridge

Underbar fridges keep chilled stock close to hand while using the space under a counter, so service stays quicker and the work area stays neater. Tropical Refrigeration supplies, installs and services underbar fridges across Cape Town and the Peninsula, with support for repairs, gas checks and replacement parts.

What an underbar fridge does in a busy service area

An underbar fridge is a low-profile refrigerated cabinet built to sit beneath a prep counter, bar top or servery. It gives you chilled storage where staff actually work, instead of sending them back and forth to a separate cold room or upright unit. In a café, pub, wine bar, hotel kitchen or takeaway line, that can save time during the rush and keep the serving area less cluttered.

These units are used for bottled drinks, garnish, dairy, sauces, sandwich fillings and other stock that must stay at safe chilled temperatures. Most underbar fridges are front or side access, with solid doors or glass doors depending on the space and what you want displayed. Because they are made for daily opening and closing, the doors, hinges and seals must be kept in good condition or they start drawing more power and losing cooling.

Sizes, door layouts and temperature options

Underbar fridges come in a range of lengths from compact single-door units to longer three-door and four-door models. Common widths include 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm and 1800 mm, with matching counter heights that usually sit around 850 mm to 900 mm. Depth varies by model, but many units are designed to fit neatly under standard service counters without wasting floor space.

  • Single-door units for small bars, tasting rooms and coffee stations
  • Two-door units for medium service counters and cocktail prep
  • Three-door and four-door units for busy kitchens, hotels and larger venues
  • Solid-door models for stock control and lower heat gain
  • Glass-door models for display, quick stock checks and faster service

Most underbar fridges are set for chilled storage in the range of 1 °C to 5 °C. That is the right band for drinks, dairy and general bar stock. If the unit is going into a more specialised setup, it is important to check the temperature range before ordering, because not every cabinet is built for the same duty. In coastal parts of Cape Town, humidity and salty air can also affect how hard the machine works, so airflow around the condenser matters more than many people think.

Where underbar fridges suit Cape Town businesses

We see these units used in the Cape Town CBD, Milnerton, Bellville, Claremont, Somerset West and Fish Hoek, especially where service speed and limited space matter. A compact underbar fridge suits a small espresso bar or deli counter. A wider unit suits a restaurant pass, sports bar or hotel service station. They also work well in function venues where stock needs to be close to the floor plan and moved quickly during events.

For premises in older buildings, the undercounter format is often the practical choice because it avoids major alterations. If you are working in a lease space, the council or landlord may limit what you can change, so a low unit that can be positioned under an existing counter often keeps things simple. It is also useful in load-shedding planning, because a smaller fridge with good seals and correct ventilation can recover temperature more quickly after power cuts than a badly loaded larger cabinet.

Installation, power supply and heat clearance

Correct installation matters just as much as the unit itself. Underbar fridges need a level surface, enough rear or side clearance for air circulation, and a plug point that matches the machine rating. Many models run on standard 220 V single phase power, but the starting load and operating current still need to be checked against the site supply. If the circuit is already carrying kettles, microwaves or ice machines, it can cause nuisance trips.

We also look at where the condenser vents, because a cabinet pushed tight against a wall or boxed into a joinery panel will struggle in summer. That shows up as longer run times, warm product and higher power use. In busy kitchens there is often grease in the air as well, so the installation should allow for access when the coil needs cleaning. If the fridge is built into a counter line, the panel openings should be left clear and not sealed over by carpentry after the unit is placed.

  • Allow space around the condenser for airflow
  • Keep the unit level so doors close properly
  • Use the correct dedicated socket and breaker where possible
  • Check that nearby heat sources are not blowing directly onto the cabinet
  • Plan for safe access when the unit needs cleaning or repair

What to check before you order a unit

Before buying, measure the exact opening rather than guessing from the counter line. Check the length, depth and height, then allow for door swing, handles and service access. If the unit must slide into a fixed opening, a few extra millimetres can make the difference between a clean fit and a costly alteration. It also helps to know what stock will be kept inside, because bottle storage, prepared food and display use all affect the shelf layout.

Ask about the temperature controller, the shelving configuration, the door type and whether the unit includes self-closing hinges. If you are near the coast, ask about corrosion resistance and the finish on exposed parts. Also confirm how the fridge is drained, because blocked condensate lines can leave water under the cabinet. A lot of callouts start with a simple issue that was overlooked at purchase, so it pays to check these points early. Small detail, but it saves headaches later.

  • Exact opening size and available ventilation space
  • What stock the fridge will hold day to day
  • Solid or glass door preference
  • Electrical supply and breaker size
  • Drainage and cleaning access
  • Finish suitable for coastal humidity or heavy kitchen use

Care, servicing and fault signs to watch

Routine care keeps an underbar fridge working properly and helps avoid spoilage. The condenser should be cleaned regularly, especially in kitchens where dust, flour or grease builds up. Door seals should be wiped and checked for gaps. Shelves and drains need cleaning so water does not sit inside the cabinet. If the fridge is running all day and all night, those small checks make a real difference to power use and component life.

Call for service if you notice the cabinet running warmer than usual, frosting in the wrong places, a compressor that keeps cycling, or a fan noise that was not there before. Low gas charge, a blocked capillary, thermostat faults and weak door seals are common causes. We handle gas refills, leak detection, thermostat replacement and compressor replacement on commercial refrigeration equipment, so underbar fridge problems can be dealt with properly instead of patched over.

Support from our Montague Gardens base

Tropical Refrigeration has served Cape Town since 2013, with our base in Montague Gardens and work across the Peninsula. Our team includes Mandla Petersen, Anele Jacobs, Ridwaan Daniels, Lindiwe Mokoena, Keegan van Wyk and Zanele Ndlovu, so bookings, installation and after-sales support are handled by people who deal with refrigeration every day. We work on underbar fridges, cold room equipment, freezer units and air-conditioning systems for homes and businesses.

If your unit needs installation, a check-up or fault finding, we can assist with practical advice based on the site conditions, the power supply and the kind of service you run. Send bookings to bookings@tropicalrefrigeration.co.za and include the opening size, the location and any fault symptoms. That lets us plan the visit properly and bring the right tools and parts.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can an underbar fridge be built into a counter?

Yes, as long as the opening size, airflow and service access are checked first. Do not box it in so tightly that the condenser cannot breathe.

What happens if the fridge is not level?

Doors may not close properly, seals can wear faster, and the cabinet can drain badly. That often leads to extra strain on the compressor.

Do you repair underbar fridges as well as install them?

Yes. We handle fault finding, gas checks, leak detection, thermostat replacement, compressor replacement and routine servicing for commercial refrigeration equipment.
