Freezer Repairs

When a freezer stops holding temperature, stock is at risk fast. Tropical Refrigeration handles freezer repairs across Cape Town and the Peninsula, from poor pull-down and icing to alarms, thermostat faults and compressor trouble.

Freezer faults we sort out every week

Freezer repairs are rarely about one part only. A unit may struggle to pull down, run too long, ice up around the door or evaporator, trip on alarms, or cycle badly because of a worn thermostat, faulty fan motor, gas leak, or failing compressor. We work on domestic chest freezers, upright freezers, undercounter units and light commercial freezer rooms used by cafés, butchers, takeaways and home businesses.

In Cape Town, coastal humidity and salty air can speed up corrosion on connectors, drain pans and condenser coils. In summer, a freezer that is already running hard can start losing temperature once ambient heat climbs past 30 °C. We look at the full system, not just the obvious symptom, so the repair actually holds and the machine does not come back with the same fault a week later.

What our freezer repair service includes

Every job starts with a fault check and a temperature reading at the cabinet, not just at the thermostat. We inspect the seals, fan operation, compressor start components, controls, drainage and defrost parts where fitted. If the unit uses gas, we test for leaks and pressure issues before recommending a refill or a component change.

  • Fault finding for poor cooling, icing and alarm conditions
  • Electrical checks on switches, relays, capacitors and wiring
  • Thermostat and sensor testing
  • Leak detection and gas recharge where the system is sound
  • Compressor replacement on units that no longer pump correctly
  • Door seal, hinge and airflow checks to reduce cold loss
  • Advice on whether repair or replacement makes better sense

If a freezer is in a food area, we also check that it is suitable for the load and the room conditions. A unit packed against a wall, or set in a cramped store room with poor ventilation, will work harder than it should and draw more power.

How we handle a repair from call-out to test run

We keep the process plain and practical. First, we ask a few questions about the symptom, the age of the freezer and the make and size. Then we arrange a visit from our Montague Gardens base to Cape Town CBD, Milnerton, Bellville, Claremont, Somerset West, Fish Hoek and nearby areas.

  1. Arrival and fault assessment on site
  2. Electrical and temperature testing
  3. Component inspection and leak checks
  4. Repair or part replacement once approved
  5. Restart, pull-down test and final verification

For bigger units or freezer rooms, we may need a return visit if a part has to be sourced. We always explain what failed, what can be repaired now and what should be watched over time. You get a straight answer, not a guessing game.

Turnaround times and when it becomes urgent

Minor faults like seals, sensors, thermostats and certain wiring issues can often be handled on the same day if access is easy and the part is on hand. More involved work, such as compressor replacement or a leak repair that needs proper pressure testing, may take longer. On busy days we prioritise stock loss, especially for shops and small food businesses with limited backup storage.

If your freezer is warming up, icing heavily or making repeated clicking noises, switch it off and keep the door closed until it is checked. Running a struggling unit can damage the compressor and turn a repair into a bigger bill. If there is a burning smell, loud buzzing or obvious oil staining around the system, call us as soon as possible.

How we price freezer repairs

We quote according to the fault, the labour needed, access to the unit and the parts involved. A simple thermostat replacement is not priced the same as a compressor job or a leak repair that needs tracing and a gas refill. We do not bundle in work you do not need, and we will tell you if replacement is the better route for an older unit with repeated failures.

  • Call-out and diagnostic work are quoted clearly before work starts
  • Parts are priced according to size, type and availability
  • Gas refills are only done after leak checks and pressure testing
  • Where possible, we repair on site to keep labour down

For commercial clients, we can also look at service intervals and a planned maintenance schedule so a minor issue does not become a stock loss. That usually saves money over the year, especially for sites running through load-shedding and generator changeovers.

Keeping freezer breakdowns from coming back

Most freezers last longer when they are cleaned and checked at sensible intervals. For domestic units, a basic service once a year is usually enough unless the unit works hard every day. For commercial units and freezer rooms, we suggest checks every 3 to 6 months depending on usage, dust levels and how often the doors are opened.

Regular maintenance should include coil cleaning, seal checks, fan checks, drain clearing and a temperature review. In coastal parts of the Cape Peninsula, corrosion and humidity can shorten the life of terminals and control parts so early inspection matters. If a unit has been running flat out since the last power dip or load-shedding event, it is worth having it tested before the next heat spell. A small fault caught early is cheaper than a warm cabinet and a lost stock count.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Why is my freezer running but not getting cold enough?

Common causes are a gas leak, weak compressor, blocked coil, faulty fan, damaged seal or a thermostat that is reading wrong. We test the whole system before quoting a repair.

Can you repair a freezer that keeps icing up?

Yes. Icing is often linked to a seal problem, poor defrost operation, blocked drainage or airflow issues. We check where the moisture is coming from and fix the cause.

Do you do freezer repairs for shops and small food businesses?

Yes. We repair domestic units and light commercial freezer equipment, including units used by cafés, takeaways, butchers and home-based food businesses.
