What a faulty thermostat does to your system
A thermostat is the control point that tells your aircon or refrigeration equipment when to start and stop. When it is out of calibration, damaged, or fitted in the wrong position, you can get uneven room temperatures, short cycling, warm storage areas and higher power use. In a cold room or freezer, that can mean product stress and extra wear on compressors and contactors.
We are often called out in Cape Town CBD, Milnerton, Bellville and Somerset West when a unit is still running but not holding temperature properly. The fault is not always the compressor or gas charge. In quite a few cases the control sensor, thermostat body, or capillary arrangement has failed, and the unit is simply getting the wrong signal.
For offices, a bad thermostat can leave one meeting room freezing and the next too warm. For homes it usually shows up as the unit not responding to setting changes, or switching on and off too often during load-shedding recovery. We check the whole control path before replacing anything, so the repair is based on the actual fault and not guesswork.
What is included in a thermostat replacement
Our replacement service is practical and direct. We remove the failed control, match the correct replacement to the equipment type, fit and test the new thermostat, then verify the unit is cycling at the right temperature range. On refrigeration equipment we also check probe placement, insulation on the sensing line where applicable, and the cabinet seal around the control opening.
- Inspection of the existing control and wiring
- Testing for stuck contacts, sensor drift and poor connections
- Removal of faulty thermostat or control sensor
- Supply and fitting of a suitable replacement unit
- Functional test under running conditions
- Confirmation of cut-in and cut-out temperatures
We work on split aircons, package units, undercounter fridges, display fridges, cold rooms and freezers. Where a simple thermostat change is not enough, we will explain whether a sensor, relay, contactor, fan control, or other component is also contributing to the fault. That saves time and avoids repeat callouts, which nobody wants when stock or staff comfort is on the line.
How we handle the job on site
Every call starts with a short fault check. We ask what the unit is doing, how long it has been failing, and whether the problem happens all day or only after power interruptions. Once on site, our technician isolates the equipment, checks for visible wear and tests the control circuit before opening up the thermostat housing.
If the thermostat is mechanical, we inspect the capillary tube, bulb placement and mounting position. If it is electronic, we confirm the probe reading against the actual cabinet or room temperature. In a lot of cases the issue is not the setpoint itself but a sensor fitted too close to a discharge line, sunlit wall, or cold air blast from the fan, which throws readings off.
After the new part is fitted, we test the unit through a full cycle. That includes start-up, cut-off and restart behaviour. We also check that the system settles properly after power comes back on, because many Cape Town properties still deal with interruptions and generator switchover. A control that is too sensitive can cause unnecessary wear after every outage.
- Call-out and fault diagnosis
- Isolation and safe removal of the old control
- Replacement fitting and wiring check
- Temperature verification with test instruments
- Final handover and operating advice
Turnaround times and pricing approach
Simple thermostat replacements are often completed on the same visit if the correct part is available and the equipment is accessible. More specialised refrigeration controls or older imported units may need a return visit once we have matched the correct component. We keep customers updated if a part has to be sourced, and we do not leave you guessing about timing.
Pricing depends on the equipment type, the control style, wiring complexity and whether any extra repairs are needed. A wall-mounted home aircon thermostat change is not priced the same as a cold room controller or freezer sensor setup. We quote on the actual work needed, with clear separation between labour, parts and any extra materials. That way you know what you are paying for before the job proceeds.
For commercial sites in Bellville, Claremont and the CBD, we can often schedule early morning or off-peak work to reduce disruption. If your business is running on tight stock windows or trading hours, we plan around that as best we can. No one benefits from a technician arriving at the worst possible moment.
When to replace instead of repair
Some control issues can be cleaned, reterminated or adjusted. Others are simply at the end of their service life. If the thermostat is hunting badly, the calibration has drifted too far, the contacts are burnt, or the casing has cracked from heat and age, replacement is usually the sensible option. In cold storage especially, a failing control can do more damage than the part costs.
We also recommend replacement when a control is no longer giving consistent readings after a gas refill, compressor replacement or major electrical repair. If the system has been repaired once and the temperature problem keeps coming back, the thermostat may be hiding the real issue or adding its own fault on top.
For older equipment we check whether the replacement part will maintain the same operating range and differential. That matters because a mismatch can cause short cycling, icing, or wide temperature swings. We would rather fit the correct part once than keep chasing symptoms every few weeks.
Maintenance intervals that keep controls accurate
Thermostats do not need attention every month, but they should be checked during routine servicing. For home aircons, a yearly service is usually enough to pick up early control problems, especially in coastal areas where salt air and humidity can affect connections. For offices and lightly used commercial fridges, a six to twelve month inspection is sensible depending on load and usage.
Cold rooms, freezers and display cabinets should be checked more often. Where stock value is high or doors are opened all day, we recommend control checks as part of the regular service plan. That includes cleaning sensor areas, checking mountings, confirming temperature accuracy and looking for signs of moisture ingress. A loose probe or corroded terminal can become a bigger problem very fast.
Our team can build thermostat checks into planned maintenance across Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, including Fish Hoek, Somerset West and Montague Gardens. That makes it easier to spot drift before it becomes a breakdown, and it helps reduce unplanned downtime when the weather turns hot.
- Aircons: inspect annually
- General refrigeration: inspect every 6 to 12 months
- Cold rooms and freezers: inspect on a tighter service schedule
- After power interruptions: check control response and restart behaviour
Why Cape Town clients call Tropical Refrigeration
Tropical Refrigeration has been serving Cape Town since 2013 from our Montague Gardens base. Our team handles thermostat replacements with the same practical approach we use for aircon installations, repairs, gas refills and refrigeration work. Mandla Petersen leads the business, with support from Anele Jacobs, Ridwaan Daniels, Lindiwe Mokoena, Keegan van Wyk and Zanele Ndlovu.
Clients book us for straightforward communication, neat workmanship and proper testing before we leave. If a control is failing because of another fault, we will say so. If the thermostat is the only issue, we will replace it and get the unit back into service without drama. For bookings, email bookings@tropicalrefrigeration.co.za and we will arrange the next available visit.
We work across the Cape Peninsula and the nearby northern and southern suburbs, so whether your site is a small home system or a busy commercial cold room, we can help with the control problem before it turns into a bigger repair bill.
