When a compressor replacement is the right fix
A compressor is the heart of the cooling circuit. When it starts drawing too much current, short cycling, running noisy, or not building pressure, the system will struggle to cool or may stop completely. In Cape Town, we see this often after long summer runs, voltage swings during load-shedding changeovers, coastal corrosion, or a slow refrigerant leak that has gone untreated.
We do not replace a compressor on guesswork. First we confirm whether the fault is mechanical, electrical, or caused by poor airflow, blocked coils, dirty filters, or a control issue. If the compressor has failed, we replace it and check the rest of the system so the new unit is not damaged by the same fault a week later.
- Home split systems that no longer cool properly
- Office units that trip, hum, or start and stop too often
- Cold rooms and freezers with poor pull-down or rising temperatures
- Compressor burnout after low gas, oil contamination, or power problems
What is included in our compressor replacement service
Our service covers the full job from diagnosis to recommissioning. We work on residential, office and light commercial refrigeration systems across Cape Town CBD, Milnerton, Bellville, Claremont, Somerset West and Fish Hoek. Where access is tight or the plant is on a roof, we plan the work so the shutdown is kept as short as possible.
We replace the failed compressor with the correct matched unit for the refrigerant type, capacity and application. That means checking the system data, suction and discharge conditions, electrical load, and the condition of the oil and refrigerant circuit before we close up and restart.
- Fault diagnosis and isolation of the failed component
- Removal of the old compressor and fitment of a compatible replacement
- Brazing, nitrogen pressure testing and leak checks
- Vacuum evacuation to remove moisture and non-condensables
- Oil check, refrigerant recharge and running checks
- Recommissioning, temperature monitoring and final handover
Our replacement process from call-out to restart
We keep the process simple and practical. On arrival, our technician checks the fault history, power supply, thermostat or controller settings, and the operating conditions around the unit. If the compressor has locked out or burned out, we inspect for contamination in the oil and lines before fitting anything new.
After the replacement is fitted, the system is pressure tested with dry nitrogen, then evacuated with a vacuum pump until moisture levels are pulled down to a safe level. Only then do we charge the refrigerant to the correct weight or superheat setting, depending on the system type. Finally, we monitor amp draw, suction and discharge pressures, cabinet temperature, and cycling behaviour.
- Step 1: Diagnose the fault and confirm compressor failure
- Step 2: Remove the damaged unit and clean the circuit as needed
- Step 3: Fit the replacement compressor and new service materials
- Step 4: Test, evacuate and recharge the system correctly
- Step 5: Run performance checks and confirm stable operation
Typical turnaround times and what affects them
Most domestic and small office compressor replacements can be turned around within 1 to 2 working days once the correct unit is available. Cold rooms, freezer rooms, and larger packaged systems may take longer if the compressor needs to be matched to an exact duty, phase, or refrigerant specification.
Turnaround depends on access, the condition of the pipework, whether the system suffered a burnout, and whether a deep clean of the circuit is required. If the compressor failure has spread debris through the system, we may need extra time for flushing, filter replacement and repeat testing. In coastal areas like Fish Hoek and the Peninsula, corrosion on terminals and fittings can also slow the repair a bit, but it is worth doing properly.
- Small split system: often same day assessment, next day completion if stock is available
- Office cassette or ducted unit: usually 1 to 2 working days
- Cold room or freezer plant: allow longer for component matching and testing
Pricing approach and why quotes differ
Compressor replacement pricing is based on the actual system, not a flat one-size-fits-all figure. The main factors are compressor size, refrigerant type, system access, electrical work needed, and whether the circuit needs recovery, flushing or extra parts. If a burnout has caused oil contamination, the job will cost more than a straight swap, because the cleaning and testing are essential for a good result.
We quote clearly before starting. You will know what is being replaced, what is included, and whether any extra parts are needed such as dryers, contactors, overloads, thermostats, or service valves. For commercial refrigeration in particular, we aim to protect your stock and avoid repeat callouts that cost more later.
- Assessment fee or call-out where applicable
- Compressor and labour quoted separately where needed
- Additional parts only added after approval
- No unnecessary replacement of working components
Keeping the new compressor healthy after the repair
Once the new compressor is in, maintenance matters. Dirty condenser coils, blocked filters, weak fans, unstable power, and low gas all shorten compressor life. In Cape Town offices and homes, we recommend regular servicing before the hot months so the unit is not working flat out when temperatures climb. For cold rooms and freezers, routine checks are even more important because a small fault can lead to product loss.
As a guide, home and office aircons should be serviced every 6 to 12 months depending on use, dust levels and whether the unit is near the coast. Commercial refrigeration should be checked every 3 to 6 months, with more frequent visits for busy kitchens, butcheries or retail cold storage. If you notice warm air, longer run times, unusual noise or a burnt smell, book a check before the compressor is stressed again.
- Clean filters and coils on schedule
- Check voltage and phase balance on larger systems
- Watch for icing, oil stains and long running times
- Keep outdoor units clear of leaves, dust and salt air build-up
Cape Town coverage and booking
Tropical Refrigeration is based in Montague Gardens and serves Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, including the CBD, Milnerton, Bellville, Claremont, Somerset West and Fish Hoek. We handle compressor replacements for homes, offices and commercial refrigeration units with the same practical approach every time: find the fault, fix the cause, recommission it correctly.
To book a compressor inspection or replacement, email bookings@tropicalrefrigeration.co.za. If your unit has stopped cooling, switched off suddenly, or is running but not reaching temperature, send the model details if you have them. That helps us prepare the correct parts and reduce downtime.
