When a gas refill is actually needed
A refrigerant top up is not the first fix for every cooling problem. In many cases, low gas means there is a leak somewhere in the line set, fittings, coils or valves, so simply adding more gas will only give short term relief. We start with pressure readings, performance checks and a visual inspection so we can see whether the system has lost charge or if another fault is causing poor cooling.
Common signs include weak cold air, longer run times, ice on the indoor unit or pipes, hissing sounds, oily residue around joints and a unit that trips more often when the weather gets hotter. In Cape Town, especially in summer and during load shedding changeovers, systems are pushed hard and small leaks show up quicker than people expect.
- Warm air from vents even when the set point is low
- Ice on pipes, coils or the indoor unit
- Short cycling or slow cooling
- Unusual hissing or bubbling sounds
- Visible oil marks near fittings
Our gas refill process step by step
Every refill starts with checking the basics. We confirm the unit type, inspect the installation, test pressures and compare the readings to the expected operating range. If the system shows signs of leakage, we recommend leak detection and repair before any refrigerant is added. That helps avoid wasted gas and repeat call outs.
Once the system is ready, we evacuate or recover any remaining refrigerant where needed, then charge the unit to the correct level using the proper method for that equipment. After that, we test cooling performance, airflow and return temperatures to make sure the unit is operating properly in the space it serves.
- System inspection and pressure check
- Leak finding and fault review
- Safe refrigerant handling and charging
- Final performance test and handover notes
Why leaks must be fixed before refilling
Refilling a leaking system without repair is false economy. A tiny leak can empty a charge over weeks or months, which means higher power use, poor cooling and more wear on the compressor. In salty coastal air around Milnerton, Fish Hoek and the Peninsula, fittings and pipe work can corrode faster if the unit has not been maintained properly.
We look for loose flare joints, damaged insulation, crushed copper, blocked drains and signs of moisture around the indoor unit. If the leak is minor and reachable, we can often repair it on site. Where a part is damaged beyond repair, we will advise on the best next step before any gas is added back into the system.
- Lower running cost after the fault is corrected
- Less strain on the compressor
- Better cooling during hot spells
- Fewer repeat breakdowns
Home aircon gas refills for Cape Town properties
For homes and flats, we work on wall split units, multi head systems and small inverter setups. These units often show symptoms after a move, after a renovation, or when the system has not been serviced for a while. If your lounge or bedroom unit is struggling, we check whether the problem is gas related or whether the filters, fan motor or thermostat settings are affecting performance.
We serve the Cape Town CBD, Claremont, Bellville, Somerset West, Milnerton and nearby suburbs from our Montague Gardens base. Where access is tight, such as upper floors, enclosed courtyards or apartments with limited service space, we plan the visit carefully so the work can be done cleanly and with minimal disruption.
Office and commercial systems need proper charging
Offices, shops and light commercial spaces rely on steady cooling to keep people comfortable and equipment safe. When an aircon system loses gas, the temperature may drift during the day, especially on the west-facing side of buildings or in rooms with poor ventilation. We assess the full system, not just the indoor unit, because the outdoor unit, pipe length and airflow all affect the final result.
For commercial refrigeration, gas levels matter just as much. Cold rooms, upright freezers and prep fridges can lose temperature quickly if the charge is low, which risks stock loss. We can work on compressor faults, thermostat issues and leak-related problems as part of the same call out where needed.
- Offices with multiple split units
- Retail and food storage equipment
- Small cold rooms and freezer rooms
- Busy sites that need after hours planning
What to expect on the day
Before we arrive, it helps to clear access to the indoor and outdoor units, switch off the system if it is icing up, and make a note of any strange noise or smell. If the unit has tripped on the DB board or lost cooling after a recent power cut, tell us that up front so we can bring the right equipment.
During the visit, we explain what we find in plain terms and keep the work practical. If a refill is suitable, we do it correctly. If the system needs leak repair, cleaning or a part replacement first, we will say so. That way you know whether the fault is a simple gas issue or something that needs more attention.
Book a gas check with Tropical Refrigeration
We have been serving Cape Town since 2013, with Mandla Petersen and the team handling home, office and refrigeration support from our Montague Gardens base. Whether you are in Bellville, the CBD, Claremont, Somerset West or Fish Hoek, we can arrange a gas check, leak test and refill where it is the right fix.
Email bookings@tropicalrefrigeration.co.za with your suburb, unit type and the symptoms you are seeing. The more detail you give us, the quicker we can plan the visit and bring the correct tools for the job.
